Change is ...Trying
Let's be realistic. As a business leader, you know that true,
long lasting change takes time to put into place. We often
resist change, feeling safer with the status quo! Usually,
we wait until life becomes truly difficult and our situation
painful before change is finally a consideration.
How,
then, do you implement change, keep it going and make it last?
Change begins with attitudes and attitudes are based on beliefs.
Human beings have a deep, often unconscious belief and connection
with Nature. In the case of change, let's parallel the nature
of human beings with the laws of Nature. Why? Because Nature's
laws are indisputable truths that have withstood change and
the test of time.
Consider
just one Natural Law, its connection to human beings and the
nature of life and business.
Change
is a natural state - The work of Nature is never complete.
Seasonal influences cause Nature's energy to be in a state
of constant fluctuation, moving between change and growth;
dissipation and integration. Yet Nature is at ease with change!
Human
beings share the same state of constant fluctuation, with
one big difference. We perceive change to be largely beyond
our control, so we fight it. Our reaction to daily change
is key and is within our control. Our acceptance that change
in life is a truly natural state will allow us to use any
change to our advantage.
By
connecting Nature's laws with our own internal natural laws,
we begin to build the same strong, natural foundation within
ourselves. This natural foundation forms our beliefs and principles,
influencing our attitude and therefore, our ability to change.
As
a business leader, help people to
use change rather than fight it! Help them
to view change as an opportunity rather than an obstacle and
to accept change as a natural event
in their lives.
How
do you make change last?
Nature is an integrated system that relies on the presence
of other elements to support its response to change, such
as adequate rainfall to nourish and assist its growth. Likewise,
as human beings, we require an integrated support system to
sustain us.
As
a business leader you need to introduce new products, operating
methods, team size, and other changes in order to succeed.
Both
you and your team need a system that will support and nourish
your needs. Your most important asset is your people and if
they are the best they can be, the organization will be the
best that it can be.
Consider
your support system. Do you know how to find the best people
and keep them? Do you have mutually agreed to performance
goals and measurements in place? Do you meet regularly at
management and team levels? Can you run a democratic meeting?
Do you have a pay philosophy? Can you resolve conflicts successfully?
These
are elements for shaping your organization into one that reaches
new levels of successful change through honoring the human
spirit. One where you will have your own unique system in
place that is based on your needs. Furthermore, it will support
any change or development you may choose make in the future,
naturally!
